The Ushakov Medal for Arctic Convoys Veterans in Scotland

On the 10th of March, 2014 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed a decree awarding the Ushakov Medal to veterans of the Arctic Convoys.

In November 2014 presentation ceremonies were held in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness by the Consulate General of Russia in Edinburgh, with assistance provided by the Glasgow City Council, Aberdeen City Council, Highland Council and Provost of Inverness, Edinburgh's St Mary's Cathedral. Afterwards, Consul General Andrey Pritsepov visited those veterans who were unable to attend the ceremonies to present them the medals personally.

Consulate General of Russia in Edinburgh is honoured to be involved into awarding Russia's Medal of Ushakov to the veterans of the World War II Arctic Convoys who live in Scotland. The Medal is awarded to the British veterans of the World War II Arctic convoys ‘for personal courage and valour shown during the World War II while participating in the Arctic Convoys' in accordance with the Russian President's Decree No 131 of 10 March 2014, and there are 214 veterans in Scotland who will receive the Medal.

The Medal of Ushakov (Russian: Медаль Ушакова), named after Russia's leading XVIII century Navy commander Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, is a state decoration of the Russian Federation that was originally established in 1944, during the World War II, specifically for those who demonstrated courage in sea warfare.

The Medal is awarded to soldiers and sailors of the Navy and the Border Guard Service of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for bravery and courage displayed while defending the Motherland and the public interests of the Russian Federation in naval theatres of military operations, while protecting the state borders of the Russian Federation, in carrying out naval combat missions with vessels of the Navy and/or Border Guard Service of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, during exercises and manoeuvres in the performance of military duties under conditions involving a risk to life, as well as for excellent performance in naval combat training.
