The 70th Anniversary of the 1945 Glasgow Rangers FC – FC Dynamo Moscow football game celebrated in Scotland
On 28 November 2015 the 70th Anniversary of the historic game played by Glasgow Rangers FC and FC Dynamo Moscow. This very important match took place on 28 November 2015 and was the final game of a series played by Dynamo in the United Kingdom to celebrate the Victory in the World War II and the war-time Alliance of the two nations. The score was a 2-2 draw – “Friendship won”.
To celebrate the occasion the Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh Mr Andrey Pritsepov, Director of Glasgow Rangers FC Mr John Gilligan and famous Rangers player John Brown exchanged gifts on the pitch during Scotland’s Petrofac Cup game that Rangers hosted at Ibrox. It was the very same field where 1945 match was played. The Scottish side received Dynamo shirt with a meaningful number – “70” – and a ball signed by Dynamo players. Mr John Gilligan presented Consul General Andrey Pritsepov with Rangers kit with a number “45” and also signed by the players.
Consul General Andrey Pritsepov said: “The 1945 match was a truly unique moment not just for those who appreciate the beauty of the great game of football but for the two Allied nations that have just started new peaceful life.
It is a privilege to see that the historic game between FC Dynamo Moscow and FC Glasgow Rangers is well remembered both in Russia and in Scotland and I am honoured to take part at the celebration of this very special anniversary.
Events like this shape football history and make the world a better place.”
Mr John Brown who took part at the ceremony noted earlier: “Being a Rangers fan I am aware of the importance of the visit of the Russians at that time so it’s an honour to be asked to represent the club… Nothing was really known about Russians when they came over in 1945 but they certainly opened the eyes of the teams they faced as well as the fans who were there”.
The 1945 game’s anniversary was broadly covered by the Scottish press. The article by Consul General Andrey Pritsepov ‘Bonds forged by the great game of football can help defeat terrorism’ was published in The Herald.
The event in Glasgow were followed by celebrations in Moscow. Representatives of all four clubs that took part in 1945 series, including Mr John Brown from Rangers, were invited to Russia and, among other events, attended Dynamo’s game with FC Lokomotiv Moscow on 30 November.
