Ushakov Medal presentation ceremony

On 27th April 2021, the Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh Andrey Yakovlev presented Ushakov Medal to a WWII Veteran Edwin Leadbetter, who took part in the Arctic Convoys. According to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation the Medal is awarded «for personal courage and valor shown during World War II while participating in the Arctic Convoys».

Edwin Leadbetter was quartermaster on escort aircraft carrier HMS Fencer and took part in 22 convoys to Russia on board of the ship, providing anti-submarine air cover for the allied vessels. On 3 April 1944 he also took part in Operation Tungsten - a Royal Navy air raid that targeted the German battleship Tirpitz, which was also considered as a significant threat to the Arctic Convoys.
